Many craftsmen choose to skive (thin) hides so that one skin can be divided into multiple projects. When the top layer is strategically removed, it may be used for wallets, while the layers beneath are repurposed into suede, nubuck, or coated and refinished to mimic a top-grain appearance. Leather can even be embossed to imitate the texture of full-grain.
